Pesticides: Public hearing with pesticide firms on toxicity studies

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:02:04 GMT

Environment committee MEPs held a public hearing on Tuesday (18 July) to query the disclosures by pesticide firms of the results of toxicity studies.A recent study has found that pesticide companies withheld toxicological studies from EU regulatory authorities for some pesticides, despite clear legal requirements to submit all relevant information to the European regulators when applying for the approval or renewal of authorisations. Parliament’s Committees on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety is hosting a public hearing with the authors of the study, industry representatives, and officials from other EU institutions about the potential shortcomings in the EU’s authorisation procedure. MEPs are expected to explore ideas on how to improve this process. The hearing is organized in association with the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. On the same day, before the public hearing, MEPs will also debate related issues with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Wanted for Murder, an Army Vet Escaped to Ukraine — and Fought the Russians

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:02:04 GMT

Craig Lang was all alone. It was March 2022, and the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine had just begun. There were nightly air raids, the rumble of bombs falling on Kyiv, and cracks of gunfire in the distance. His wife and two children, before leaving for the relative safety of western Ukraine, had been sleeping on mattresses in the hallway, far from windows that could shatter from missile strikes. Weapons and ammunition were being handed out to civilians in the streets of the capital. Lang, who had served in the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as on Ukrainian front lines following Russia’s first incursion into Crimea and eastern Ukraine in 2014, realized that his combat skills would be useful. He thought to himself, “My country is under attack, I have to do something.” Born in North Carolina, Lang enlisted in the U.S. military at the age of 18. After his service, which ended under murky circumstances, he moved to Ukraine and lived there on and off sin...
